Kirk Franklin a well know gospel artist, started his popularity by leading and directing urban Christian choirs. And he became more famous by recording gospel songs with his choirs such as God's Property, The Family, One Nation Crew, etc.
As a child Kirk Franklin was abandoned by his biological mother, and raised by his great-aunt Gertrude. Kirk was directing choirs as a young boy in his church. In 1993 Kirk Franklin and his gospel singing group "The Family" released their first album, which also hit high on the R&B charts as well. Kirk was awarded his first Grammy award when he released his album "Whatcha Lookin' 4" in 1996. This album went double platinum for Best Contemporary Soul Album.
In 1996 Kirk Franklin married his friend Tammy Collins; she has supported him through his singing carrier. In 2005 Kirk went on the Oprah Winfrey show to talk about the struggles he had in his past with pornography. But Oprah only aimed questions at Kirk about his downfall of pornography and not his highly successful gospel career and achievements. When the camera panned around to his wife Tammy she didn't look so pleased with Oprah Winfrey's interview of her husband, the holy-spirit in Tammy could sense that Oprah was not out for Kirk's best interest that day.
Mr. Kirk Franklin has recorded over 12 gospel music albums, including a Christmas CD.
When I started listening to Kirk Franklin's music, it gradually took me away from listing to most rap songs like Dr. Dre and Eazy, Too-Short, Ice Cube, and Tupac to name a few. I was engaged into the way Kirk made his songs a mix between gospel, hip hop, and R&B. The lyrics of gospel music are and should be the main focus, and that's why I kept listening even until today.
Kirk Franklin has made music and collaborations with many other gospel music artists and R&B artists from Crystal Lewis to R. Kelly and others as well.
In 2001 Mr. Franklin released a beautiful song named "Smile" some urban radio stations play this song frequently such as The Steve Harvey Morning Show.
